The Abolishment of Banks

The abolishment of central banks and the establishment of equal and virtually free credit is a realistic solution to both homelessness and the end of the obscene profits and effective command of the economy that central banks enjoy. If credit were equally available to all, either through spontaneous or democratic facilities, its cost need only be equivalent to the small cost of its labour.

For example, consider the paperwork involved in lending someone £10,000. If labour took quarter of an hour to process this, the cost of this amount of credit could be as little as £2. If this cost, and nothing more, counted as the monthly interest, the interest rate would be 0.02%. If the interest were not compounded, the yearly rate would be no more than 0.24%.

A similar process could be undertaken to take out a small loan of, say, £100-200. There could be ATM machines specially developed to achieve this for people who need to take out a small loan very quickly. If someone has a monthly wage they could enter their address and place of work into an ATM, they would be given the amount required and this would be deducted from their wages on the day they would receive them.

Again, like the two examples given above, a cheap loan of around £2000 would pay for a deposit and six months rent on most properties. Similarly, a higher amount would pay enough to install heating, water and electricity in an abandoned property. In a society where equal credit was available, a £20,000 loan would be available to everyone. With the squatting example described, this would work out as a very cheap mortgage, because even if the debt took ten years to pay off, the extra interest would only add up to £480.

Of course, once you take the possible effects of inflation into account, there is a higher cost to credit. However, it is no good blaming the poor for this as, currently, higher earners, the rich and consumer addicts generally are more to blame currently for inflation due to the excessive loans that they are prepared to take out. It also has to be stated that high interest rates actually help to increase inflation. In an era of cheap and equal credit, the winging of the rich would be because they can’t spend more than they can earn. A high inflation rate combined with a high unemployment rate could act as a kind of socialism as debts decrease in real terms

Reforming the benefits system

Although Blair’s announcement that the leaving age for compulsory education will be raised to 18 won’t appear to connect with the current benefits system, many 16 and 17 year olds will be affected. Currently, there is no form of Jobseekers Allowance for under 18’s (or Asylum Seekers or economic migrants, as such, who haven’t contributed to the National Insurance system) and they can only claim benefits for themselves if in education or training.

Currently, a 17 year old can, conceivably, get a job. But if the school leaving age is increased to 18, many young people who simply want work experience and not more examinations will be put in a difficult financial position. If they choose to have some experience of work they will most likely be paid much less than the minimum wage and will be unable to claim benefits if their parents are on a low income. Although this policy seems designed to encourage further education it will force those who don’t want to be educated into education and affect the finances of many poor families. It may also create a new underclass.

It would be much simpler if there was a kind of “Young Persons Allowance”, non-means tested, of around 65 pounds per week. This could begin as soon as an individual reaches the age of sixteen and could carry on up to 19 or 21, at which point Jobseeker’s Allowance would become available. This would allow young people to choose from part-time work, work experience, education or training without being made financially disadvantaged by their choices. Any paid work undertaken would only affect the amount of Housing Benefit a person would be eligible for.

The Young Persons Allowance could be incorporated into the Income Support system, with the same amount being available to all those, including Asylum Seekers, who are eligible for it. Similarly, the remit of Jobseeker’s Allowance would be increased to include students and volunteer and immigrant workers. The amount would also be increased to about 90-95 pounds per week. Adults on low incomes would be entitled to full Income Support and be able to earn up to £40 a week before £5 is deducted for every £5 earned.
Early Poetry (autumn 2004)
Too bored to live
But I don’t want to die
The streets are filled with the walking undead
Thoughts, dreams, ideas, aspirations
Deadened by consumerism
Assaulted by statism
Searching for the individual
Like searching for a needle in a haystack
Hey there everybody!
Quite scary stuff last night about Israel's nuclear programme, especially as it's only there to "deter" a conventional attack that would kill millions of Isreali civilians. Israel has 100 missiles, but probably well over 200 Hiroshima-size bombs (kilotons). This is not to deter or destroy a chemical/nuclear or biological weapons program in an Arab neighbour or Iran as this could quite easily be achieved using conventional-warheaded missiles and airstrikes (as on Iraq in the early '80s). The purpose of Isreal's nuclear arsenal is two-fold.

In the (unlikely) event of Isreal being invaded by all its neighbours, at once and by land, it would launch its nuclear-armed missiles at civilian targets in each country while detonating over 100 bombs buried along the Israeli border, wiping out any invading army and making a repeated invasion attempt impossible. Of course, 1000's of Israeli civilians living near the border would also be killed and 1000's more civilians would be killed both inside and outside Israel by nuclear fallout. Basically, this would be ethnic cleansing on a massive scale, as Israel would sacrifice some of its own population in order to save its cities while destroying those of the Arab world.

Oh, btw, anyone reading this who has a blog of their own, could you put that under as a reply please!
